Counselling for fathers, parents, and families in Ontario

You don't have to be falling apart to deserve support.

Murray Coulter is a second-career therapist, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), who has sat in boardrooms, navigated a long marriage, and raised a family. He brings all of that into a calm, unhurried, judgment-free room — online, wherever you are in Ontario.

No pressure. No sales pitch. Just a conversation.

If any of this sounds familiar

None of these mean you're broken. They mean you're carrying something heavy, and you've been carrying it alone for a while. That's what this practice is for.

  • You're the one everybody leans on — and there's nobody you can lean on.
  • You love your kids deeply, and some days you don't recognize yourself in how you react.
  • You've done the podcasts, the books, the late-night searching. You're still stuck.
  • You've been told you're “fine.” You don't feel fine.
  • You keep meaning to deal with it. You keep not dealing with it.

Whatever mix of those you're in, the door here is the same: a free 15-minute conversation with someone who has heard harder things than you think, and who isn't going to treat you as a problem to be fixed.

Murray Coulter, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

A therapist who has lived a few chapters of his own

Most people picture a therapist as someone just out of school, nodding along with a notepad. Murray isn't that. He came to psychotherapy as a second career — after decades in the corporate and financial world, earning his CPA and CMA designations, managing teams, and living through the same pressures that bring so many of his clients through the door.

He knows what it's like to sit in a meeting while your mind is somewhere else entirely. He knows what a long relationship costs and what it gives back. He knows the particular weight of being the person everyone expects to have it handled.

That history isn't a detour from his work as a therapist. It's the foundation of it. He isn't intimidated by your life, you won't have to soften the hard version, and because his goal isn't to keep you in therapy for years, everything gets translated into skills you can use on a Tuesday night when things get hard.

Focused work, for people who are genuinely struggling

Murray's practice concentrates in three areas where the need is real, the support is thin, and most therapists simply aren't trained. He also works with anxiety and depression, grief and life transitions, relationship strain, and career or retirement concerns.

Counselling for fathers

A dedicated space for fathers to talk honestly about the pressure to provide, the fear of getting it wrong, the strain on their marriage, and the kind of dad they want to be. No performance required — and no treating you as though something is wrong with you.

FASD support

Counselling for adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and for the families and caregivers around them. FASD is a brain-based disability. You cannot discipline it away, and you cannot love it away — but it responds to strategies designed for it.

Child-to-parent violence

Support for parents living with aggression or violence from their own child. Concrete skills for safety and limits that hold, and the end of “you must be doing something wrong.”

Real therapy. From wherever you actually are.

This practice is 100% virtual. Sessions take place by secure video, across Ontario. It isn't a compromise — for many people it's the reason therapy finally works. The depth doesn't go anywhere. Only the commute does.

The view from a real session: your car, your office, your basement, your truck.
Secure video by Zoom. No waiting rooms, no parking, no running into someone you know.
Small towns, remote communities, and rural Ontario included.

Two approaches, used simply

Murray draws primarily on two evidence-based frameworks. Neither is abstract, neither is used as a rigid system, and both translate into ordinary conversation and real change.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

When the harder you fight a feeling, the stronger it gets, there's a different route: stop the war, make room for the feeling, and put your energy where it counts. Together you'll get clear on what you actually value and take steps toward it, difficult feelings and all — tools you can use in the 6 pm meltdown, the conversation with your spouse, the 2 am spiral.

Informed Family Systems, with a paternal focus

Drawing heavily from Internal Family Systems, this work starts with a simple idea: you aren't one unified self. You're made up of parts — the protector, the provider, the peacekeeper, the critic. When you meet those parts and understand what they're guarding, the old triggers lose their grip. You become more present. You react less. You father better.

Three steps. That's it.

You don't need a diagnosis, a plan, or a tidy explanation of your problem to begin.

  1. Book a free 15-minute consultation

A short, no-obligation call to see whether Murray is the right fit. Ask him anything.

  2. Book your first session

Scheduling runs through Jane, a secure and straightforward booking platform. You'll get your appointment details and video link by email — no phone tag, no paperwork shuffle.

  3. Start where you are

You don't need an agenda. You don't need to have it figured out. Say what's true today, and take it from there.

You've been carrying this for a long time

Asking for help isn't weakness, and it isn't a confession of failure. It's what a competent, capable person does when a problem is more than one person can carry alone. Murray has been the guy holding it all together. He's sat where you're sitting. And he'd be glad to talk.

No obligation. Replies within one business day.
